We were already feeling pretty excited to see Big Skyseason 3 on ABC down the road. Now, we’ve got yet another reason to be!
According to a new report coming in from Deadline, former Lost and MacGyver star Henry Ian Cusick is poised to recur this season alongside Blindspot alum Luke Mitchell, Seth Gabel, Anirudh Pisharody, and Madalyn Horcher.
In order to better understand these new castings, we need to understand the general premise of the story. Check out the new season 3 logline below:
In Big Sky Season 3, private detective Cassie Dewell (Kylie Bunbury), under sheriff Jenny Hoyt (Kathryn Winnick), and newly appointed sheriff Beau Arlen (Jensen Ackles) maintain order in Helena, Montana. But when a local backcountry trip led by charismatic outfitter Sunny Barnes (Reba McEntire) goes awry, the trio face their most formidable mystery yet.
Mitchell is set to play Cormac, described as “backcountry outfitter Sunny Barnes’ charming son. He’s the worker bee on her camping trips, making sure guests are always equipped and comfortable.” Meanwhile, Cusick is Avery, a “well-meaning, successful tech entrepreneur who books himself and his stepdaughter Emily on Barnes’ camping trip.”
As for the other castings, Gabel is “Walter, a recluse who lives in a cabin in the Montana wilderness. His unpredictable nature can make for menacing run-ins with stray hikers.” Pisharody and Horcher play Luke and Paige, two people from the big city who decide to take part in one of Sunny’s excursions for Luke’s birthday. In some way, we tend to think that all of these people will be tied in to this aforementioned mystery.
In other news…
The aforementioned Deadline report also notes here that J. Anthony Pena, who recurred as Deputy Mo Poppernak for season 2, is now going to be a series regular. This show is certainly shaping up to have a huge cast this go-around! From the moment they decided to bring Ackles on board after The Boys, we got the sense that Big Sky was going to take no prisoners in trying to make this season a big deal. We’ll have to see if it pays off in the end.
Big Sky is shaping up to have quite the third season, with the latest casting changes and details about its new mystery.
For the third season, J. Anthony Pena, who plays Poppernak, Jenny Hoyt’s (Katheryn Winnick) partner at the Sheriff’s Department, has been upped to series regular, and the drama has added five new recurring characters, according to Deadline. They will be played by Luke Mitchell, Seth Gabel, Henry Ian Cusick, Anirudh Pisharody, and Madalyn Horcher.
ABC/Anna Kooris
The new mystery will see Jenny, private detective Cassie Dewell (Kylie Bunbury), and the sheriff introduced in the Season 2 finale, Beau Arlen (Jensen Ackles), investigating when a local backcountry trip, led by Reba McEntire’s mercurial matriarch and charismatic outfitter Sunny Barnes, goes awry.
Mitchell’s Cormac is Sunny’s “charming son,” who is responsible for ensuring the guests of the camping trips are “equipped and comfortable.” Gabel’s Walter is “a recluse who lives in a cabin in the Montana wilderness” and whose “unpredictable nature can make for menacing run-ins with stray hikers.”
Cusick will play Avery, “a well-meaning, successful tech entrepreneur who books himself and his stepdaughter Emily” on a camping trip. Pisharody and Horcher will play couple Luke and Paige, who’s responsible for them being on a camping trip for his birthday.
Big Skyended its second season with Beau not getting off to the best start with Jenny or Cassie, after he came in to temporarily take over for Sheriff Tubb (Patrick Gallagher); he’d been retired after working in Houston. We learned he has a brother and followed his ex-wife (whom he’s probably still in love with) to Montana, where she and their daughter live with her new, rich husband. But by finale’s end, Beau joined Jenny and Cassie for drinks. The drama is moving nights for Season 3, from Thursdays to Wednesdays.
Big Sky, Season 3 Premiere, Wednesday, September 21, 10/9c, ABC
Big Sky country is about to get a little less spacious: The ABC drama has added five actors to its cast for the upcoming Season 3, according to our sister site Deadline.
The five additions, all in recurring roles, center on Reba McEntire’s newly introduced backwoods outfitter Sunny Brick and an ill-fated wilderness trip she leads. Henry Ian Cusick (MacGyver, The 100) will play tech executive Avery, who books himself and his stepdaughter Emily on Sunny’s excursion. Luke Mitchell (Blindspot, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), meanwhile, will play Sunny’s son Cormac, who helps lead his mom’s outdoors trips.
Anirudh Pisharody (9-1-1) and Madalyn Horcher (Doom Patrol) will play Luke and Paige, a young couple from New York who join Sunny’s trip to celebrate his birthday. Finally, Seth Gabel (Salem, Fringe) will play Walter, a recluse who lives in the Montana wilderness and has “an unpredictable nature.” (Uh-oh.)
Plus, cast member J. Anthony Pena, who plays deputy Mo Poppernak, has been promoted to series regular after recurring last season.
Big Sky has already welcomed a host of new cast additions for Season 3: Along with McEntire, Jensen Ackles will be a series regular next season after making his debut as new sheriff Beau Arlen in the Season 2 finale. It also moves to a new night this fall, premiering Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 10/9c on ABC.
They were Lost, but now they’ve been found enjoying a fun-filled Fourth of July weekend.

Cusick reposted the photo on his Instagram Story account, writing “Detox week” alongside the shot.
Producer Melvin Mar also captured the occasion, sharing images of the group having a “great 4th of July weekend.” Another of Mar’s posts showed Kim’s Hawaii Five-O costar Grace Park and actress Jacqueline Kim joining them.
